Baking Soda Helps Tame GERD/Acid Reflux

 

Gastro esophageal Reflux Disease, also known as GERD, also known acid reflux and heartburn, is a stomach disorder where foods and acids from the stomach get brought back up from the stomach and get caught in the esophagus.

When this happens, a burning and painful sensation takes place in the lower chest.

This pain is also followed by:

  • Snoring
  • Bloating
  • Belching
  • Sore throat
  • Difficulty breathing

Acid Reflux may be triggered by eating too spicy foods, chocolates, and certain fruit juices.

When acid reflux starts, it is important to clear the esophagus of the acid as soon as possible to prevent damage to the esophagus.

Why Does Baking Soda Help With Acid Reflux?

Baking soda has several properties that give fast relief to acid reflux.

  • Stomach acid causes discomfort and burning of the esophagus. Baking soda is a “base” that neutralizes stomach acid and helps bring the stomach back into proper “pH” alignment.  Baking soda can also help every-day heartburn upset stomachs.
  • Since baking soda is an alkaline substance, it reduces the possibility of the acid and other contents of the stomach from being brought back up and getting lodged in the esophagus.


How to Use Baking Soda for Aced Reflux

To use baking soda to help cure acid reflux, do the following:

  1. Add one-half backing soda to a glass of water.
  2. Use baking soda two to three times a day.
  3. If the symptoms of acid reflux persist, see your primary care physician!

Are There Risks to using Baking Soda for Acid Reflux?

Baking soda contains sodium.  Because of this people on heart medication and special low-salt diets should avoid not use it.

Elderly people should only use baking soda twice a day for Acid Reflux.
